Ovate pseudobulb. Very closely related to Cattleya (4 pollinia) except Laelia has 8 pollinia.
Sympodial growth habit.

has about 50 to 70 species, they belong to two unrelated groups: one from Brazil, another from Mexico. The Mexican group
retains the name of Laelia. The Brazilian group is grouped with Sophronitis in the year of 2000 although
