GerminationWhen a seed finds itself in a suitable location, it will start to germinate or sprout. Most seeds contain nutrient reserves for the new plant to grow. The root will be the first part to grow, and it will always grow downward toward the soil no matter how the seed is oriented (gravitropism). |

| Seed coat: | the protective layer outside the seed, shed after the seed sprouts. |
| Cotyledon: | the embryonic leaf in a seed. The number of cotyledons differentiates monocots from dicots. |
| Hypocotyl: | the stem of a sprouting plant, between the roots and the cotyledons. |
| Primary root: | the main part of the root, and the first part to grow. |
| Secondary root: | roots that grow from the primary root. |
