Two types of root system |
|
Fibrous root system |
Taproot system |
|
Embryonic primary root dies off; subsequent adventitious roots and their lateral roots grow from the plant stem. No prominent root: branches show equal development. Shallow penetration into soil. Examples: monocots, ferns and dicots. |
Embryonic primary root becomes taproot; subsequent lateral roots branch from this taproot. Prominent taproot and smaller secondary roots. Can penetrate deeper into soil. Examples: gymnosperms and dicots. |
