Roots

Roots anchor the plant to the ground, and absorb water and minerals from the soil. They can also be used as storage for food.

Two types of root system

Fibrous root system

Taproot system

Embryonic primary root dies off; subsequent adventitious roots and their lateral roots grow from the plant stem.

No prominent root: branches show equal development.

Shallow penetration into soil.

Examples: monocots, ferns and dicots.
Embryonic primary root becomes taproot; subsequent lateral roots branch from this taproot.

Prominent taproot and smaller secondary roots.

Can penetrate deeper into soil.

Examples: gymnosperms and dicots.
