| Tropical rainforests are ideal places for plants to live. Temperatures are 70–85°F year round with little daily fluctuation, and there is lots of rain all year. 70% of rainforest plants are trees, and they are mostly evergreen trees with leathery leaves and smooth bark. Overlapping branches and leaves of rainforest trees forms a canopy that can be 100 feet above the ground. Most rainforest plants and animals live in the canopy rather than on the forest floor. Plant growth is restricted not by season but by competition from other plants. Many spices and foods (cacao, coffee, cinnamon, jackfruit, pineapple, vanilla etc.) originated from rainforests. The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world. | |
